Braunton: The local area and attractions

Braunton

The village of Braunton is one of the largest villages in England. It is famous for The Great Field, a medieval system of strip farming believed to be one of only two remaining in the country. The Tarka Trail starts in the village and follows the estuary up stream. Home to Tiki, Second Skin and Salt Rock, Braunton is the centre of the surfing community. The village boasts a varied choice of shops, Banks, Take aways, Resturants, Character Pubs and the Tourist Information Centre. May Bank Holiday weekend is the Carnival and Village Fair.

Barnstaple

The main town of Barnstaple is 5 miles and has a Train Station, Cinema, Theatre, and many High Street Stores. Local Bus Service runs from Barnstaple to Braunton, Saunton, Croyde and Georgeham.

Saunton

Just a 3 minute drive takes you to Saunton, three fabulous miles of golden sands. Extremely popular with Surfers, Kite Surfers and Wind Surfers. The Atlantic ocean helps to provide an excellent Long Boarders wave. Between Saunton and Braunton is the famous Braunton Burrows, UNESCO has designated the Burrows, Braunton Marsh and Great Field the first Biosphere in the United Kingdom. Saunton Championship Golf Club nestles within the dunes.

Croyde

Around the headland from Saunton is the Famous Surfing beach of Croyde Bay, a fantastic Short Boarders break. Many competitions are held here during the year and Oceanfest is always held in June. Croyde is an award winning beach and patrolled by RNLI Lifeguards during the summer. From the beach you can look out to sea and see Lundy Island, well worth a visit. Famous for its Puffins, Seals, Birds and Lundy Ponies.

In the village of Croyde you will find a choice of pubs and resturants, various surf shops, Tea rooms, Ice Cream Parlour and local stores. Croyde is home to the Surf Schools - Surfing Croyde Bay, Surfing South West & Barefoot Surf School. Other activites include Roylands Riding Stables, Cascades Indoor Funpool, Park & Skate Ramps. Baggy Point is an area of outstanding beauty it is National Trust Land, and provides stunning walks around the headland from Croyde to Putsborough.
